"The Lady's sphere of control now has a radius of over sixty kilometers." It doesn't matter which Project Unification base you're in: you receive an emergency briefing/status report from Viletta. And for many changing bases was a suddent event indeed. Fort Alhambra is lost, its staff quickly moved to one of the two available facilities: Sakihama or the SSR base in Russia. Well, there is also Shirakawa's hideout in South America, and apparently it is functioning again. But that's small good news, and this time the bad news are much greater.

"Fortunately after the initial burst, its rate of growth has slowed down significantly. But it continues to grow and will do so until the Lady has control over the whole Earth, and who knows how much more. The small blessing here is that neither her nor her Guardians tried to breach the sphere and leave their area of influence... so far."

Viletta sighs, looking down before taking on a stern expression.

"Project Unification was dealt a serious blow today. We lost many good people, captain Linjun and his Shirogane are gone. But we mustn't lose hope. People of Earth need us more than ever before, and we can't afford to let them down. The plan to weaponize the Discovery of Self and the relic found on Balmar has been accelerated. As soon as everything is ready: we will strike."

[2]

"Am I bitter? Of course I'm bitter. But there's no choice, take 'em down!"

Trying to use or just checking any of the remaining bases' TSEN reveals a shocking truth - the teleporters were turned off, and are being dismantled (under heavy guard) at this very moment.

"I liked having easy logistics of jumping between facilities too, but we can't afford that now. Alhambra's TSEN is in the Lady's hands, and she's got a track record messing with this type of device. All the other TSENs have disconnected with Fort Alhambra already but there's no telling if she won't just connect it back. It's a risk we can't afford."

"Agreed. There's not much of a choice but to take the long way around now, hmm? I strongly suspect the Lady planned it all out, even the parts where Gavin and Venczel acted against her."

"You see, the part where the Tronium explosion caused by late Linjun just up and disappeared... our friendly plant monster couldn't do it all by itself. Venczel used, channeled that power to bring the Lady closer, make it easier for her to cross the threshold and move to this reality. I'm pretty certain. But now the question is: was she the Lady's unwitting pawn to the end, or did she do it on purpose?"

The Discovery has launched into space.

The ancient stone building raised from the earth, freed from the cave that sheltered it for thousands of years. It's no building - but a giant cathedral-like starship. A starship that quickly rose through the atmosphere and before anyone could stop it, took its place on Earth's orbit.

Now it's floating in space, slowly circling the planet and not responding to any signals, seemingly lifeless. Something has obviously happened inside, something possibly not good at all - but there's just only one little problem preventing anyone from getting in close to investigate what has happened.

The Seekers, the Guardians (of Past, Present and Future) - even one of those was a very formidable foe. Now there are many, floating around the Discovery and, as an observation probe found out, attacking everything that comes close.

How much worse are things going to get?

"I'm assuming command of Unity Group."

Here's a message from Lee Linjun.

"Your little game, where the organisation continued to exist and pretend nothing's wrong despite not even having an acting officer, moved on for long enough. As long as it only affects internal affairs I couldn't care less, but now the stakes are simply too high."

"You know well what happened. The alien known as the Lady has made her move. She has the power to affect reality itself and wants nothing less than to subjugate humanity, it's not too late to stop her but we need to act, and we need to act RIGHT NOW. Her vessel, what we all used to know as Discovery, is now in Earth orbit - but not for long. Using the Shirogane's Tronium Cannon, I'm going to take it out."

"The only problem is the Lady's grunts on the way. That's where you come in. I've sent a similar message to UN Spacy, the ESUN military, anyone who still has a space force. We're gathering a fleet, and then we strike."

"I hope to see you there too, Unity Group. Not even for your own sake. This is a crisis where individual lives and organisations no longer matter. This is for the sake of humankind itself. Lee Linjun, out."

"Hey."

"I took the libery of informing ESUN - and the SSR." Suddenly there's an important announcement from Commander Howe.
"Gavin has all three seals he needs to bring the Lady back to this world. The good news is that he needs to be in the Discovery artifact to do it. It's under guard and the second anything suspicious is going on - we're moving in. The bad news is... I don't really have to tell you, do I? Efforts to track down Gavin, his allies, and his units are underway. Pray we find him before he makes his move."

"This is all."

That's all for the announcement - but the commanders are involved in another discussion behind open doors. Which means overhearing it by accident or purpose, or just outright joining in, is not difficult.

"Well look at this. Looks like we have a big bunch of heroes on our hands, hmm?" Out of nowhere, Commander Huffman has a thing to say to each and every member of Unity Group.

"The media can't get enough of your success, and for good reason. Little things such as saving the world - twice, are not easily forgotten. I'm sure there are people out there just waiting for a chance to interview each and every one of you."

"But that's not what I want to tell you. Non-stop action is tiring and we need our pilots well-rested. So... there you go. You certainly earned it!"

=============

It's a hot springs visit! For the next few days, Unity Group has a luxurious hot springs resort booked all for itself. Situated in a mountainous region, it has all the classics - there's table tennis, all kinds of gaming and sports facilities, plenty of snacks and booze, not to mention: the springs themselves of course. Segregated with the mens' baths on one side and the womens' on the other, they are perfect for all kinds of shenanigans.

"I wonder what's the future and the council up to. The fate of a rat catcher once all the rats are gone..."

"You worry too much, Dirchs. Secure the future when you can, but when you can't - enjoy the present!"

The commanders are having a yelled-above-the-rocks conversation, Samuel Dirchs resting in deep water on one side while Imogen Howe drinks heavily on the other. Huffman himself sits atop the rock in a meditating pose, his skinny (and apparently heavily tattooed) body in full display.

(It's a mingle post - feel free to either address the commanders or do something on your own. Either in this post as a thread, or write a new post all by yourself, as you wish!)

The Ouroboros has taken to the skies. The gigantic Biometal destroys everything in its wake - living creatures having their life essence sucked out as soon as its shadow casts down on them.

And to make matters worse, the dark domes are appearing again. Shortly after Ouroboros' activation, several of them popped up in various places around the globe. More of them materialize every few hours, threatening to engulf their surroundings.

Many of Unity Group have gathered, and for a reason that should be obvious - Commander-in-Chief is gone. He, and so many others, have departed from this world recently. Roland Antov did not even leave a body to mourn. But the Unity Group leaders stand up to say their own eulogies.

Not an announcement per se, but people who are interested in recent findings were directed towards Solomon Huffman.

"Quite an interesting tidbit. Here, take a look."
He has two schematics to show.
"On the right - they disintegrate quickly, but this is the rough internal form. Materials are a mix of metal and earth and why they work at all puzzles my scientific mind, but nevermind that. Look at the design, it is not too dissimilar from normal designs, is it not? Just very... refined. Except for the lack of cockpit, of course."

"And here, on the left. Much cruder, there's a cockpit - added almost like an afterthought, or something welded on by an amateur. Now, remove extra armor slabs, remove the cockpit and everything pilot-related. How does it look like? Like a cheap knockoff. But still a knockoff - the similarities are obvious."

The schematic on the right shows a half-destroyed and cut into Portent, one of the new enemies.
On the left, something you had a chance to fight on many occassions before. The Lady's Good Men mass-produced Yob.

[3]
Now this is an announcement.

"I need everyone in a briefing room. ASAP."

The briefing rooms all show the same video - a short scene of combat, less than a minute long, repeating itself over and over. And as far as combats go, this one is very one sided.

"Less than an hour ago, an ESUN military base in central America was attacked. There was no sortie because the whole thing was over in minutes. The defenders obliterated, the base is in ruins, assailaints gone. We have no clues regarding their identity except for this recording, and an anonymous tip-off."

"It's a newly emerged terrorist group called SSR. They believe ESUN is a tyrannic faux-government that holds Earth in an iron grip and so, their goal's to destabilize and overthrow it. They are extremely well trained and armed..."

The video shows Genoaces, Daughtresses and similar mass production units massacred as military buildings explode around them. The attackers' machines - Gesterbens, and Adeles.

"And they know about us. For SSR, Unity Group is like a crown jewel of ESUN. A cracked and weakened one, but that just makes it an easier target. If they vanquish us, their cause grows in strength. And this is exactly what they are going to do."
[NPC log part only]

"You... expect us to continue keeping them around?" Commander Antov blinks in disbelief at the man in his gabinet.
"I'd like to remind you that Unity Group is a fast response unit, not a private prison."

"You may consider this a favor - one that would need repayment through extensive field testing, something which Unity Group is no stranger to. Happy Valentine's."

[Actual part you can react to]

"So... looks like it's good news for a change."

There are two new units in Unity Group's hangars.

"Thanks to our benevolent benefactors..." Dirchs did not make air quotes, but the tone of his voice makes it obvious he'd like to.
"You can say hello to Grungust Alpha and Huckebein Omega. These are top of the line machines we have here - pre-production in fact. We are tasked with testing their capabilities in the field, so take them out for a spin as many times as you'd like. Considering what they're capable of, I don't think I'll have to persuade the lot of you much."

"Oh yeah, one more thing."

"BrightSaber and the rest are fully repaired but they're still under lock. Commander-in-Chief's orders. No one's allowed to use them unless it's an emergency, and the Commander's the only person who has authorization AND knows how to release the locks."

Look, it's another announcement. All UG pilots were informed to come in person or look at the nearest screen, which shows Antov's uneasy face just now.

"This is a high-priority broadcast. Do I have everyone's attention? Good. So..."

"The good news is that we found the Lady's Good Men headquarters. It's in Africa and satellites do not show anything in the area, so it's most likely underground. It wouldn't surprise me if it was Professor Dupond's find, the ancient installation. Anyway, that's the good news."

"And the bad news is that there's a high energy reading detected in the area. I have no idea what the Good Men are up to, but they're doing something. It's too risky to send you guys in through the faux crossgate, even if we'd figure out how to activate it. You'll have to dig your way in, and my suggestion as to how is already on the Commander's table."

[2]

"They're going to fight Lady's Good Men? The final battle, and then it's over? ... Without me?"

Hey, look who else heard of the announcement, somehow. Gavin is not even angry, throwing himself around or cursing loudly like you'd expect him to be.

"This... isn't fair. This is all wrong. This isn't how it's supposed to go at all. I'm the hero... I'm the hero, dammit..."

He looks depressed.

"Shit! FightSaber was already lagging behind, and now that my sword is destroyed... I can't save anyone like this! To be able to protect my friends, to do that - I'll need to work hard to get my own, up to date machine."

"Yeah! It's time to do this! I'll show you guys what I can do yet."

[The actual post you can respond to:]

Something's not right with Unity Group bases. Resources distributed towards unit maintenance and repairs trickled to bare necessities, the quality of food served in mess halls took a noticeable hit, even water in the showers is measured now! What the heck is going on? The man responsible for support has the answers.

"Gavin requested a new unit for himself and somehow, the request was approved. The thing is, we're covering expenses related to its construction, and since it's supposed to roll out fast, it's not cheap. I'm cutting costs where I can just so UG stays afloat."

Logistics Specialist Dirchs looks exasperated. Not by this question, but by the situation.

"And before you ask, no I don't like it either. Just hang in there. This is not a permanent setup. It'll pass soon... I hope."
[1]
"..."

Commander in chief Roland Antov stands in front of a new place of interest in Alhambra - a memorial. Written on a heavy slab are names of those who gave their lives during service to Unity Group. Kanade Amou, Yancy Beckett, Denzel Hammer - these are only the most recent names. And there are surely more to come.

"No one ever said this is going to be easy..."

The commander mutters to himself. Are you here to talk to him, or to pay respects?

Suddenly out of nowhere, a remote briefing is announced for all members of Unity Group. The transmission is led not by any UG member though, but by Commander Simon Gato - the aloof leader of the MJP project.

"Our enemies' assaults on targets of importance have weakened recently. You may have wondered why, the command surely did. Well, this is why."

Click! The screen changes to show captured footage of combat. Shiny Wulgaru units are present, and so are the much more numerous but primitive battle pods fielded by the giants - but what is new is that they are fighting each other.

Between the former's superior maneuverability and the latter's superior numbers, it is unsure which side is winning. The recording ends before anyone could emerge victorious, but one thing for sure, it was a very large engagement.

"It seems the aliens hate each other as much as they hate humanity. Don't think we're off the hook yet, this is not a permanent situation, and we need to take advantage of it."

"A counterattack is already being planned. For the first time in years, we can take the fight to the Wulgaru and not just defend."

Looks like the briefing is going to end here, but no - the focus changes to the logistics officer.

"By the way, the AGE System produced enough DODS Guns so all our Genoaces are now equipped with them. It probably doesn't matter much to those of you in unique one-of-a-kind prototypes, but if all you had before was a beam spray gun or an assault rifle..."

"Well, you should be happy with the results."
The last few months were busy for Unity Group, and maybe you were with it during that time, or maybe you are a recent arrival. But either way, the Group was doing its hardest to be prepared - gather personnel, equipment, support, all for the moment when it can finally be called operational and functioning. This moment is now, as all bases receive a simultaneous live broadcast.

"May I have everyone's attention? You... you probably know who I am already, but just in case. I am Roland Antov, the commander-in-chief of Unity Group. Starting today, the Group begins its operations. From now on, when there is a crisis somewhere on Earth we will sortie and do our best to stop it, so I am counting on everyone."

"Hmm. And while you save the world, my men will make sure Unity Group stays afloat and your toys are fixed up and ready to go."

"Y-yes. Presenting to you all, this is Samuel Dirchs, our logistics and support specialist. Our base commanders are here with me too..."

"I'll take it from here, commander-in-chief. Imogen Howe, Alhambra is my territory. There's no emergency at the moment but we're ready to take off at any moment, tackle any problem."

"I'm the Sakihama Base commander, Salomon Huffman. Indeed Earth is relatively peaceful at the moment, but how long will it last? We only wait for a sleeping giant to awaken... not to mention, possible TSEN-related incidents."

"Wait a second, commander! TSEN had an incident?!"

"That's ridiculous. It would be reported immediately and besides, it is supposed to be a 100% safe technology. Huffman is trying to ruse you."

"Oh, am I now?"

"Is, is that so? Wait, is this still being recorded?"

"Of course it is."

Bleep. End of transmission - surely this could have gone better. Fortunately the broadcast was insider-only, so you're not in risk of losing all your sponsors immediately after they watch it.

Still, the commander in chief is so young, flustered and inexperienced, and the others don't seem much better in that regard. Will the Unity Group really be alright and stand up to high expectations thrown at it by the whole world?

Only time will tell.

And yes, the TSEN incident comment was a ruse. No such thing happened.
