I know there is a device of sorts for this kind of... purpose. But I know not how to operate it, and...

The spear is a weapon as good as any other. They all have strong and weak points. For this one, it is ease of learning its basics, and superior reach it offers.
These are also reasons why, though not dishonorable, many look down on it.
