Suddenly, it's all over the media. Official proclamations, interviews, news - different forms but they all say the same thing.
A new player is in town. SSR - it stands for Stetigkeit, Sicherheit, Ruhe. Stability, Safety, Peace: a new special operations group not related to ESUN governments, but working closely with non-membership countries. Russia, southeast Asia, South America, these places are not affiliated with ESUN, but they too want protection.
With the declamations comes an accusation, an accusation directed at Unity Group itself. The SSR spokesman says they have proof of ESUN governments pressuring the UG, making it value the interests of people in charge over safety of the common man. SSR itself will stand immune to such corruption, and if Unity Group tries to intervene in an operation to push an agenda - they should be wary and stay out if they know what is good for them. By "them", the spokesman means us of course.
He also accuses Unity Group of lacking discipline and organisation. Being a loose group without strict chains of command and authority means it is not as effective as it should be. Inadequate to face many of threats to mankind, even if it had some successes of its own.
The identity of SSR members is not public. The only one who revealed himself is the spokesman, an individual unfamiliar to you, one Lee Linjun.

Lowen General is prostrating himself while apologizing loudly and profusely.
"It is true the information Unity Group received about SSR, and vice versa, both arrived through channels owned by us, Chimera. The latter however was delivered stealthily, without knowledge of our members. We did not even know SSR's true nature until you did. However it is no excuse! An administrator's duty is to know all information that flows through his network, even and especially if it tries to be unnoticed!"
"Please do not blame Edel Bernal or my organisation for what transpired. If you have to, please blame me for becoming complacent. Schlan is trying to find the source of false information even as we speak. The second he finds a clue, I will inform you right away! Moreover, we have analyzed both videos in greatest detail and it seems no kind of manipulation took place. Both broadcasts look completely genuine even if reality disagrees with them."

T-that's what that guy means though, right?
That we're not disciplined enough, and all of us have to be army-like and combat ready. When that happens, even -I- have to be all realistic about things like our Lady Paranoia is. I'll start talking in weird lingo, and then I'll stop believing in magic, and start thinking that I can't fire guns in one hand or cut bullets with a sword!

The problem is that the world doesn't see it that way, and even if we try to tell them, it comes back to what Kei just said. Who's gonna accept it?

As my Master's familiar, I'll respect their freedom! Watching how he fought for his own free will makes me realize how hard it is to even have the ability to choose, sometimes.
Everyone's got to come to terms with their decisions. And I don't think those two, however young they are, took their choices lightly.

I DID WONDER HOW LONG IT WOULD TAKE BEFORE THE NON-ESUN COUNTRIES WOULD FIND SOME WAY TO NOT DEPEND ON UNITY WHEN APOCALYPSE NUMBER FOURTEEN CAME.

[Leos snorted at that. Russia which was willing to bomb its own troops and steal technology from other countries. Southeast Asia which was a corrupt corporate 'paradise'. South America had its own share of issues as well.]
The ESUN aren't saints, but this is almost as absurd as Loni's claim on heroism.

She shrugs. "It's possible that some evil faction sent you footage from a reality where the UG and SSR are at each other's throats....or evil. Or both."
She strokes her chin in thought. "Of course, a theory like that is difficult to falsify...what process did your information specialists use to vet the videos? Did they search for computer imaging markers or jump cuts or what?"

"I am not an expert in this kind of thing, but I will try to explain as well as I can. I understand that Schlan is trying to find proof that the videos were tampered with in some way, after they were taken. Also, proof that events they depict did not actually happen but are staged, like a movie. Of course that cannot be objectively judged..."

The explanation with fewest assumptions is that these war-mongerering movie-makers did use live footage of Loni running...which means someone was shooting footage from within the UG base...
"Whatever the case, odds are someone in the UG or ESUN has been payed off: and they won't be easy to find." Dido says grimly. Then she grins at Lowen: "I suppose that's the perk of Chimera having so few members: easier to vet for corruption."
