My apologies. I merely didn't expect an advanced civilization to lack something we consider so important and basic. In order to measure time more accurately, our day is separated into 24 hours. An hour is 60 minutes in length, and a minute is 60 seconds.
There are food tables, and beds of repose, and mechanical wombs... and others. Not everyone is allowed access to an artifact. They are rare and precious. Those I mentioned are shared in a city or village, and without them - the community would surely fall into ruin.
[Sielje gives Roger a peculiar look. Is that pity?]
These are beds that perceive what ails you and provide succor, all by their own. They are useful for treating sickness and wounds, though grave injuries may be too much for them.
What an unusual society you live in. Are there no farmers to provide the food? Or people willing to bring children to life in more... traditional ways?
Why worry about food if the tables take care of it? There would be no glory in acting as such.
Most are born the... normal way.
[Sielje maintains a stoic expression, trying to ignore blush slowly creeping up her face.]
The mechanical wombs are used for when the woman of the union wishes not to be burdened for months - as befitting a warrior. Or when the union is not between a man and a woman at all...
I see. Both of the things you mention are a rarity in Paradigm; but after you describe it this way, the purpose of that device becomes clear to me. This is how, through communications, we understand each other more.
And I'd expect food made by a skilled chef to taste much better than something created by an automated table, for starters. You should taste Norman's cooking one day.
I do not know. You speak very highly of him, but on Ankaia the servants and common folk are not respected. Theirs can be a life as honorable as anyone else's, but there is no glory in it.
The difference is that one man will follow the rules he set for himself, while another man can't do even that. Only one of these men is a professional.

You don't have them on Ankaia?

Perhaps... the ones who tend to artifact mechanisms may know of such ways to split time...

What artifact mechanisms, apart from your mecha, do you have?

What about the other two?

[Sielje explains but with a note of impatience, like someone talking about basic things to a child.]
Paste of grains, and some herbs. There is no chocolate like on Earth. The taste is bland so beasts are hunted for their meat, and for personal glory.
The wombs...
Need I really explain it?
[But now she's hesitant, instead.]

I haven't seen it.
I haven't seen any watch anywhere.
I wouldn't steal a watch.
Don't ask me anymore questions.
