After all, unlike a munitions based armament, you've got it absolutely sealed tight - except for when the triggers pulled, I assume. So what you have is something that would be otherwise capable of leaking, like say, plasma. Added to which, the fact it needs such cells at all shows it can't simply a beam generating weapon, because there's some kind of existing matter at work.
Still, wouldn't have guess you'd be able to change the settings.
