At first I didn't get it either but then I did a bit of digging into other battles. This has been happening for a while...look.

It's not immediately noticeable as whatever is doing this has been careful about it, but the lower-class souls have been immediately disappearing from at least 42% of all battles that involve a Gate. I asked around and no one else in the Foundation has an explanation for this. Even you-know-who told me to stop focusing on what was happening with the small-fry but for it to happen this much...it's pretty worrying.
