I'm not saying that what he did wasn't worthwhile or that he didn't deserve the praise but he chose to act on his own instead of consulting anyone else. There were enough units there that he should have been able to get assistance and potentially have gotten out alive. There are enough ways to die alone out there where a team would get through safely. Don't get any foolish ideas in your head about "duty" or "endurance" or you'll wind up buried under social pressures and expectations like the Japanese are.
